What God has for me is for me and His timing is perfect. Becoming a member of my sorority is the best example of this. I waited long & didn’t always wait well. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get discouraged along the way. But my destiny is divine and Delta was always my destiny.

5 years in, I still look around at my Sorors and my letters in disbelief at times. And then I’m reminded that God is good. There are other areas of my life where I’m waiting on God to do a thing. Delta reminds me that He will and it will be right when I need it.

Be encouraged on this Monday. Know that God will fulfill every promise He’s made. And while you wait, pursue Him & make sure your vision is aligned with His.

a day in the life…💫

TFA Benefit Dinner Edition

If you work in non-profit or education, you understand the importance of showing up as your best self at fundraising events. And, if you really know me, you know these events have the potential to send my social anxiety through the roof.

This in mind, I prepared myself. I started my day at the track with Brian, working out and playing volleyball. Then, I joined my Zoom meetings, completed my work, and closed my laptop. I drank a natural anxiety soother and burned some incense to calm my mind. I fixed my broken nail and did my makeup. I picked an outfit that made me feel like the boss I know God is making me.

I walked in with a clear and confident mind and I was proud of how I showed up! Resilience is self-care & preparation is key.

On April 12th, 1926…God created Nana! 🙌🏾

Today would’ve been my Nana’s 98th birthday! 🎂

She once told me she loved me more than she ever loved anyone and I believe that. I was her only grandchild and she was committed to me experiencing God’s love through her and having the strongest foundation for faith. She succeeded, then and now.

Nana would’ve loved this song. She knew she needed God and taught me to turn to Him immediately. Even on her worst day, she thanked God for her life. Her whole life proved that God is good.

So much of who I am and who I’m becoming is because of my Nana. I’m so thankful to have had a grandmother that spent so much of her life being exactly what I needed. I believe she received a clear assignment from God to make me her priority before I was born and she accepted it joyfully.

Happy Birthday, Nana! Thank you for being who you were & still are to me. Losing you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it brought me closer to God, and I know that’s exactly where you would want me. I love you! I miss you. I’m celebrating your life today! 🫶🏽🙏🏾🕊️

Lessons from Quarter 1
1. The hardest part about going to the gym is going to the gym.
2. The weapons formed against me will not prosper…but they sure will form.
3. Resilience is putting on your oxygen mask first.
4. Every obstacle can be turned into an opportunity.
5. I am not a lady of leisure. It serves me to accept that and do a good job at my job.
6. These are not the same knees I used to pop lock and drop with. These knees are 35 AF.
7. Even my bad days prove that God is good.

A little Monday morning mindfulness for your timeline…✨

Let’s be real. Mondays are hard. I just love the weekend and being able to choose my path. After 2 days of pure bliss, I cannot believe it’s all snatched away by an alarm designated to remind me that I am not a lady of leisure and Mercedes wants their money in just a few short days. 😩

Because I cannot seem to shake the feeling that this truth brings, my anxiety is usually through the roof on Sunday nights. So, I’ve implemented a practice called “Monday Morning Mindfulness” to get me back in the game. I put an hour on my calendar before my work day begins to do something that will prepare me for the work week that is not related to work.

Today, I chose to pick up my prayer journal for women. It includes a scripture, devotion, and reflection.
Of course the scripture for this week is Proverbs 3: 5-6.
Of course it’s the scripture I blogged about last week.
Of course God wants me to trust in Him with all my heart.

In my blog post, “Seek Understanding,” I share how it’s okay to question everything and everyone but God. When it comes to our creator, you just have to trust that all things are working for your good. I share how this can be hard and how me and God made an agreement to communicate through numbers with meaning to me. When I see a 38, I know I’m headed in the right direction.

Dallas has a special place in my heart! 🩶

God will always put you in the right place at the right time. Brian and I planned a getaway to Dallas to visit the church and hear from the pastor that He feels most called to follow. Our visit to The Potter’s House was more than we imagined. We felt so at home for it to be our first time there and the word was exactly what we both needed.

God will also give you more than you asked for! We connected with an abundance of family and friends (many not pictured) and left each gathering feeling so full. I really appreciate how easily we fit into each other’s lives and I pray that continues to be our story.

Our trip reminded me of what’s important.

1️⃣ God created church for a reason. T.D. Jakes said “something happens when church folk get together in one place.” That is real.

2️⃣ Family first. Spending time with my family and Brian’s family continues to be the best part of my life. Each time, I learn so much about who I am and who Brian is and feel so loved. You don’t get to choose your family but if I did, I’d choose them every time.

3️⃣ MAKE ROOM - in your partnership - in your friendships - in your familial relationships - on your calendar - at your job - in your decisions - everywhere & in everything - Make room for God to be God!

Glo Up Girls Trip 2024 💫

When God placed Glo Up Girl on my heart, He also placed the desire to create life-changing connections between women. And my 35th birthday trip to NOLA felt like a great place to start!

These 6 women have a natural ability to pour into others so I knew we would all return home better than we came. And…DID! It was the best time in the best city. We shared space in a beautiful home and took every opportunity to share a piece of ourselves through conversations. Everyone was open & vulnerable. Generational wisdom flowed in both directions. Each of us was seeking to understand and willing to offer empathy wherever needed. Each of our light got to shine bright. 💖

I asked everyone to come to dinner prepared to share their vision for the year. With each word spoken, I felt more and more inspired. I had follow up questions for each vision and it became the most fruitful discussion. We all left so full and felt so supported. And it’s evident God’s not done with any of us yet. We will all continue to make an impact on this world.

God is so good. He outdid Himself when He gave me these ladies. And this experience was divinely orchestrated. While we celebrated another year of my life, it was so much more than that.

Mommy, Auntie Mickey, Auntie Cousin Mel, Amber, Steph, & Sigele - Thank you! I love you all. I will cherish this experience forever. 🥰

I pray God allows me to connect more and more women in intentional ways. Look out for future Glo Up Girls Trips and experiences.

Today marks the last day of my 34th year! 🥳

I continue to be grateful for my life. I’m grateful for every blessing, and every lesson. 34 has truly been a learning year. I’ve found that there is something to be gained from every loss and every challenge. Often, it’s wisdom. Sometimes, it’s courage. Or, I may find serenity. There is peace in feeling so connected to God that I know what He removes was not meant for me. I find strength in knowing that He would not put more on me than I can bear. The insight developed as a result of attempting to realize the most ambitious of visions, whether the desired outcomes are reached or not, is incredible. My God is a God with a plan and He has the foresight to know who I need to become to execute my assignment. I trust that all things work together for my good and that every obstacle I face is in service of qualifying me for my call.

And I know God is not done using me yet! 34 and counting…✨

The day I stopped comparing myself to anyone but who I was yesterday was the day my life improved. I promise I’m only competing with me and I pray you do the same. Often God presents a similar situation to one you’ve experienced before, guiding you to leverage the lessons learned. I hope you do better. Decide the outcome you want and align your path towards it.

I coached a lot of teachers this week. The success of my Friday coaching owes so much to Monday-Thursday. I considered the outcomes I did or did not achieve and changed the variables I control, my words and actions. I finished the week with a teacher saying “this was so helpful…I love your energy!” I’ll take that result!

I choose to move on.

In a conversation with Oprah, Viola Davis talks about her experience with therapy and how and when she decided she wanted to be different. I remember when I encountered a version of myself I no longer wanted to be. I was happy being that person for a long time. I realized that winning at a different stage of life will require me to be different. It was hard to accept because what comes with the choice to be different is the choice to move on from people, places, and things that you’ve known and loved for what feels like forever. And with moving on and letting go comes grief. Those people, places, and things will always have a home in your heart. You have to live with you everyday so prioritize becoming a version of you that you really love. God is growing you to be who He needs you to be at the next level. Let Him use you.

✨ Repotting A Plant✨

Ya girl might have a lil green thumb…🪴

And I never thought I’d see the day! In fact, I coined the phrase “playing in the dirt” as a kid when my mom would do any version of planting and gardening to express how much I didn’t love it. It’s just something about living things (that you don’t have to take care of that much 😂) that will change your mood and make your house a home.

✨ Did y’all know @traderjoes sells random cool plants and they change from week to week?! I got this one in the spring and could not have imagined it would turn into this. My fellow @blackgirlsintraderjoes know what’s up! Do yourself a favor and grab yourself a cute lil plant and see what happens!

P.S. I’ve watched my mom do this a few times and I tried to imitate the process. Will report back on how it goes. Pray for me and my plant!

✨ Weekend Recap ✨

In case y’all were wondering what I did with my 2 lil days off…🙄😂

✨ My aunt invited me to the anniversary celebration for her church ( @fellowshipchicago ) and we had a time! We cruised Lake Michigan on The Odyssey! I connected with some wonderful people and I believe some of those relationships will grow from here.

✨ Brian cut a plant that was giving tree energy down to a reasonable indoor size and used what he cut to make me a plant baby. It’s giving renewed life in my house and I’m loving it.

✨ Good news…I managed to make two really great meals this weekend. Banana almond pancakes with berries on top & rasta pasta + zucchini. Brian said it was some of my best work. ☺️

✨ After hanging with such good people from Fellowship on Saturday, I was inspired to go to church in-person for the first time in a while. I’ll admit, I was initially a skeptic of the idea of a 1 pm service but it was everything and I’ll be back. The sermon was entitled “God is Trying to Show You Off” and I included the key points in the 2nd to last picture.

✨ As some of you know, Brian and I are on a volleyball team. I’m not going to lie to y’all on this internet…it didn’t go great this season. 😩 So we’re building the habit of practicing at least once a week so we’re ready for next year! It seems to be going much better!

Per my last post, send help! Because that 2 days off was truly not enough time…I’m glad I made the most of it though!

A Saturday Reflection…✨

Let me start by saying I am grateful God has blessed me with a good job and the ability to provide myself with a life that I love.

But 5 out of 7 days though, God?!? This work day to not work day ratio just seems off to me…so much so that I woke up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to get this off my chest. God, I just don’t believe this is what you had for us. It’s honestly got the devil written all over it. These lil 2 days off just ain’t right!!

So God, if it’s anything you can do…let us know!

While we wait on God I thought I’d share how I’m making it through…✨

✨ I’m continuing to protect my peace. Working 5 out of 7 days is draining enough so I’m not about to let the negativity and chaos drain me more.

✨ I’m working on eliminating small day to day decisions with systems and routines. The goal here is to make space in my brain for the bigger decisions and tasks that will have more impactful outcomes.

✨ I’m being more intentional about how I spend my time, on work days and off days. Time is not unlimited so I’m using it wisely. I try to think of it as currency. And if God don’t get back to me on my prayer soon, I need a new plan. I’m working on multiple streams of income that will lead to early retirement.

I just want to do what I want to do every day! I promise I’d still contribute to the world in really positive ways, God!

More on this later but have a good Saturday y’all! 👋🏾👋🏾

Changing your perspective will change everything. Just days before we climbed this inactive volcano, we experienced this same ocean from the beach right below. And in the early 1900’s, this same crater was used as a strategic military lookout, as it provides panoramic views of Waikiki. I never felt insignificant. And, I’m reminded I’m a really small part of a really big world…a part of a much bigger story than just my own. And the role I play is significant. 💫

My big sis reminded me what I am and what I am not. I’m a daughter, a sister, a friend, a partner, a cousin, a niece, a Godmother, a soror…a believer, an educator, an engineer, a coach, a mentor, a leader…a dancer, a cheerleader, an athlete, a social 🦋.

What I am NOT…is God. I am powerful and I am not God. I do not have the power to sabotage my destiny. I do not have the power to change what is already written.

And my Spec reminded me that what God has for me is for me. If what I thought He had or what I’d hoped for is not what He gives me, I will trust Him and know that it’s for my good.

You don’t get to choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.

In my family, cousins are raised more like siblings. So my mom’s 1st cousins are more like my aunts & uncles and I appreciate them being a part of my village in that way. My grandmother and her siblings would be proud of how we continue to cherish each other the way they taught us to. My family is a constant reminder that God is love!

Fun Fact: My AOL instant messenger screen name was blackbarbie06. Apparently I was giving barbie doll at 16 and I'm a proud Marian '06 grad.

I've always had a pretty simple and classic look. I've been told I'm aging backwards but so is my mama so that makes sense (see last picture). 😏 It's part genes and part taking care of myself. I just wasn't raised to cover up my imperfections with makeup. Thank God for my Spelman sisters for getting me together so I could hold my own in the photoshoots because I would've been fresh faced AF, otherwise. 💙

There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing what you need to be happy with your look. I just choose to do it from the inside.

Pro Tips: Hydrate! And if you're going to wear makeup everyday, wash your face....EVERYDAY! Sleeping in makeup is the biggest no no…and the fastest way to dehydrate your skin. Makeup wipes alone are not good enough...use one to get it off, wash your face, use a toner, moisturize, and dab on an eye cream. And throw a face mask in the routine 1-2 times a week. Oh and body oils lock in moisture best fresh out the shower. So put it on before drying off and use lotion once you're dry.
